CND Campaign to Reverse Trident Replacement Decision has Begun

On 14th  March, the government suffered its biggest rebellion on domestic policy since Labour came to power - only the Iraq war rebellion has been greater. 161 MPs voted against the government's motion calling for a replacement to go ahead, and 167 voted for an amendment stating that the case for Trident replacement has not been proven.  The local Liberal Democrat MPs Edward Davey  (Kingston & Surbiton), Susan Kramer (Richmond Park) and Vincent Cable (Twickenham) voted against the motion and Conservative Ian Taylor (Esher & Walton) abstained.

It is important that you write to your MP to follow up on the issue.  The government has said that the decision is reversible – act now to make sure your MP knows this!  Please send a letter thanking her/him for taking a principled stance.  Encourage further action on this issue, emphasising that the decision is reversible.  Raise with them the importance of the government pursuing multilateral disarmament initiatives. A crucial opportunity is coming up in May at the NPT Preparatory Committee in Vienna.  Please ask your MP to press the government for details of disarmament initiatives which they will be putting forward at this important conference.
